Managing anxiety in Children
Denise uses a cognitive behavioural therapy based programme called “From Timid to Tiger” to work with parents to assist their child overcome anxiety. the system is a CBT based system for persons under 10 years old. There are ten structured sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy for children with handouts for the parent and child to take home. Indeed the book is widely available as a resource but really needs the overview of a trained professional therapist. DIY psychotherapy is never recommended!
How does the anxiety therapy work?
The course is structured as a series of activities for the parent to do with the child, based around child appropriate learning such as reading and drawing. The therapist assists the parents in learning to use the activities with the child. By completing the activities the child learns new perceptions and behaviours, in other words Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in a child friendly format. Doing the activities assists the child, builds trust and bonding with the parent and enables the therapist to observe in session and from feedback the next week what additional patterns and issues might be present.
What is a session like?
At each therapy session the therapist (Denise) leads the parent and child in a relaxation routine based on mindfulness. Then the lesson of the week from the manual is introduced to both parent and child. Usually the lesson is then worked through for the first time in the therapy session. The parent is then provided with a chance to ask any questions about implementation and using the exercise, and the child is given the chance to comment about their feelings and insight too. Once the sessions are under-way the session also contains chance for feedback and further work from the proceeding session exercise.
How many sessions are needed?
The course is based around the 10 session format from the manual, however additional sessions and exercises of mindfulness and coaching may be appropriate since no two people are the same!
What about older children?
This system is designed for children up to the age of 10. Therapy for teenagers and young people is also available from both Stuart and Denise, often in partnership with the Joshua Nolan Foundation. Both the foundation and Anxiety UK can sometimes assist in therapy cost for people from their teens.
